"We are Family,” an Orlando Gay Chorus concert celebrating the power of family, community and inclusion through song, will be presented May 14-15 at The Plaza – Orlando, 425 N. Bumby Ave.
“The Orlando Gay Chorus is a diverse, inclusive family, bound together by our love of music,” said Artistic Director and Conductor James Rode. “Each of us belongs to several families … some by birth, others by choice and “We are Family” will celebrate this inclusion.”
In addition to the title song, We are Family, the chorus also will sing Color Out of Colorado, Magic To Do, Let The River Run, Tell My Father, True Colors, Take Care Of This House, It Takes A Whole Village and many other selections.
“Magic To Do might sound like an odd choice for a concert about family,” commented Rode. “In fact, this song will be part of OGC’s set for the 2016 GALA Choruses Festival in Denver, whose theme is “Of Magic and Dreams.” This popular number from the musical Pippin is sure to grab the attention of both our audiences here in Orlando as well as in Denver this summer!”
OGC will pay tribute to chorus members and its extended family that are part of the military with the song, “Tell My Father.” A poignant number from the musical, The Civil War, the song is told from the perspective of a young soldier, Private Samuel Taylor, who has parting words for his father.
Associate Artistic Director Harold Wright will conduct several songs. Choreography (and “choral-ography”) will be directed by Dwight Shropshire and Alecia Boon. The band, consisting of six to seven musicians, will accompany the chorus.
American Sign Language interpretation will be presented by Prof. Debbie Drobney and her students from Valencia College.
Concert times are 7:30 p.m. May 14 and 4:30 p.m. May 15. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and student tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Advance tickets are available from any chorus member at 407-841-7464, or at www.orlandogaychorus.org.
