Many are familiar with the idea that "painting is dead". The idea reflects the fact that the entire range of genres of painting has been done. Everything from absolute representation to pure conceptual art has been explored. This leaves no possibility for a "new" type of painting. Although usually applied to painting, this idea can be applied to all art.
The most recent work of artist, Parker Sketch will be featured at The Peacock room, June 16th through July 19th. With his show, entitled "Art is Dead", Parker addresses the concept that art is dead, that everything has been done. Drawing heavily on Pop Art, Dada, and Action Painting, he also references some unexpected genres in art history like Expressionism and Minimalism. Parker about this collection; "This is a very conceptual body of work, but it also is a lot of fun. I am very aware of art history and the role that contemporary artists play. I know that it is unlikely that anyone will create a new genre of art, so I chose to look back at select movements in art history and interpret them through my brushes, through my eyes... and have a lot of fun while doing so." The result is a playful frolic through art history. Parker presents us with wildly varying subject matter and materials. Traditional painting, found objects, collage, and spray paint are all present. At first glance it looks like a group show by many different artists, but after spending a little time with the art a common aesthetic and vision emerges.
Parker talks about the inspiration for the show; "I am often saddened by the fact that I wasn't around during a lot of moments in contemporary art history. Monet and Impressionism was considered scandalous when it was first shown to the public. I can't imagine how the world had it's mind blown when Andy Warhol piled up Brillo Pad boxes in a gallery and called it art. Or that moment of freedom that artists must have been given when they saw the first footage of Jackson Pollock creating his Action Paintings. All of these things were new and exciting, never done before. Now, the entire spectrum of art has been done, and all art is now a variation of a genres explored decades ago. We live in a world of rehashed retro art movements like 'Neo-Expressionism'. Of course, art is not dead. There will always be art as long as there are people who have the burning desire to express themselves aesthetically. Even though it may have been done before, there will always be new voices."
