“My name is Harvey Milk and I am here to recruit you.”
All of us remember that famous quote, whether from books, documentaries, or the movie Milk. While there were gay men and women who were trailblazers for gay equality, Harvey was the one who had the knowledge, the organization and the perseverance to lead an effective and lasting campaign to improve the lives of the gay community. Harvey gave us many things, but mostly he gave us hope.
Harvey’s legacy has been expanded by his nephew, Stuart Milk, who is the co-founder, along with Anne Kronenber of the Harvey Milk Foundation. This non-profit organization presents a global message reflective of Harvey’s life. Stuart has traveled the world, most recently in South America, promoting the message of recognizing cultural diversity and acceptance among all people, specifically gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, the young , the disabled.
In honor of Harvey Milk’s birthday on May 22nd, The Center is hosting the first Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on May 20th at Dubsdread Country Club on Par Avenue, Just east of Edgewater Drive. Breakfast will begin at 8:30 AM and the program will begin at 9 AM. The Center felt that not only should we recognize Harvey Milk as an iconic figure in the LGBT Community, but to also celebrate and share his message of diversity.
To assist us in sharing the message, we are proud to present two exceptional supporters of diversity: U.S. Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-9th) and Stuart Milk. Congressman Grayson has been a frequent guest on programs such as Bill Maher and numerous news shows such as Rachel Meadow Show and Anderson Cooper, to name a few. Described as blunt and pugilistic, Congressman Grayson proudly wears such labels. Unabashedly progressive in his views and position, the Congressman has always been a major supporter of LGBT issues and has served as co-sponsors for many bills including ENDA, the Hate Crimes bill, the Respect for Marriage Act and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, among others.
Stuart Milk has spoken at events and met with governmental officials in Europe, Asia, Latin America, South America and the Pacific, along with hundreds of venues across North America. A frequent guest of the White House, Stuart will be following our event to attend a White House function honoring Harvey Milk on May 22nd. A friend of The Center, Stuart has graciously adjusted his schedule to accommodate our breakfast celebration.
Tickets for this enlightening and informative breakfast are $40 and are tax deductible. You can order tickets on line at http://harveymilkorlando.eventbrite.com/ or purchase them at The Center.
“You got to give them hope. Hope is never silent”. Harvey Milk
